Private Alfred Anderson, 5th Black Watch, opens his Princess Mary Tin on Christmas Day 1914
Alf was the last surviving soldier who had served on Christmas Day 1914 & he recalled the silence of the day. He was also the last surviving member of the Old Contemptibles and the Black Watch.
In 2003 I had the great honour of meeting with him in his home and holding the Princess Mary tin in my hands – he used it to store his copy of the New Testament in that his Mother had given him on his last leave. He was a lovely chap & a true gentleman.
